PERRANWELL manager Dave Fisher said he thought the quality of his side's play surprised their Carlsberg SWPL premier division opponents as the Jolly's Combination League team earned a shock win in the second round of the Cornwall Senior Cup.
Goals by Matt Rose and TJ Wilson earned the visitors a third round home tie against Sticker and left Fisher a happy man.
"I think we surprised them with the quality of our play," he said.
"They thought it was going to be a bit of a pushover, but we richly deserved the win "It was not until the final stages when we tired that we came under any real pressure."
It was the third time of asking that the game went ahead after the pitch at Pennygillam had been waterlogged and both sides began slowly.
But after a fine run by TJ Wilson, which was only ended by a foul on the edge of the Launceston area, the visitors grew in confidence. The home side conceded a number of free kicks as they struggled to contain Perranwell, whose strikers Matt Rose and Steve Brewer caused all sorts of problems.
And after 16 minutes Perranwell went ahead when Launceston failed to clear a corner and Rose flicked the ball with the outside of his right foot past home keeper Paul Hider.
And it was Hider who was the busier of the two keepers as Perranwell went in 1-0 up at half-time. A spate of bookings at the start of the second period livened the tie up before Perranwell doubled their advantage midway through the half. Again Launceston were unable to deal with a corner and when the ball fell to TJ Wilson he volleyed it past Hider to make it 2-0.
As Perranwell began to fade in the heavy conditions they had to defend with Shane Selley outstanding.
And it was not until the 90th minute that Launceston pulled a goal back through Sam Davey but despite six minutes of added time Perranwell held on for a famous win.
Clarets' manager Paul Smith said: "I thought we did well in difficult conditions and especially after a break of four weeks without a game. If I had to have some criticism it would be that we did not create enough clear-cut chances.
"It was one of those days when nothing was going to go for us."
To crown an awful day for Smith he also lost striker Dominic Richardson with a badly gashed head on 20 minutes and he will now miss the Christmas period.
